In the small town of Dunnville, the Rotary Club had been known for their lively, community-centered events for decades. One of their most cherished traditions began in 1993, with their inaugural duck race. It was a spectacle to behold: 5,000 bright yellow rubber ducks bobbing along the river, each carrying the hopes of their ticket-holding sponsors. At $5.00 a ticket, it was an affordable way for the whole community to join in the fun, all while raising funds for local causes.
The race quickly became a beloved annual tradition, with crowds gathering each year to cheer on their ducks. Over the years, the event saw ups and downs, but its spirit never waned. However, as time went on, the race took a hiatus. For many, it felt like an era had ended.
But in June of 2024, just as the town was gearing up for the Mudcat Festival, an exciting announcement brought the buzz back. The Dunnville Rotary was reviving the duck race, this time with a new twist. The race would feature 500 ducks, a smaller but still spirited fleet. Being $20.00 a ticket, with a limited 500 tickets up for grabs, sales went quickly as they practically ‘flew’ into the hands of those who were anxious to try their ‘duck luck’ while supporting the local hospital.
As the ducks were released into the water, a cheer went up from the crowd. The sight of the yellow flotilla drifting downstream, each duck symbolizing a ticket holder's support, was both heartwarming and exhilarating.
When the final count was tallied, the event had raised an impressive $7,940.00. The Rotary Club, committed to making the event a resounding success, decided to add some of their own funds to the total. In a gesture that reflected their dedication to the community, they donated a total of $14,000.00 to the Dunnville Hospital and Healthcare Foundation.
We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who bought tickets and participated in the race. "You did this," The community's support was evident in every cheer and every dollar raised.
The loud quack of the 2024 race echoed not just along the river but through the hearts of everyone who had come together to support a cause close to home. The ducks had truly made a splash, and the spirit of the race was alive and thriving once more.
See you next Year!
